Reading And Daily 5
This year at Harris Creek we are using the Daily Cafe as our reading model. The Daily Cafe, also called the Daily 5, is a student centered model that focuses on reading, writing, and reading to someone. Students practice reading and writing each day to build their stamina. We are working to create independent readers and writers. We also work on different reading comprehension strategies each day that are called our "focus lessons". We also have Cafe lessons that focus on Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, and Extending vocabulary in reading. While students are reading or writing independently I am conferencing with students and working with groups on various strategies.
BOOK BASKETS
Each student has a book basket they store in our book nook. In each student's basket they have at least one non-fiction text, one fiction text, a magazine, and their reading and writing journals
READ TO SELF
Ask your child what strategy they learned today! As a class we created a Read to Self I-Chart, which is an indepdence chart. This is reminding students what they should be doing during this time.
READ WITH A PARTNER
Each student needs to work on fluency of reading because fluency builds comprehension. Every day during Daily 5 session each child will read to self and read with a partner.
JUST RIGHT BOOKS
I-PICK: Students choose books to read during the Daily 5 that are just right for their reading level by using the I-PICK strategy. This is a great strategy for parents to use at home when they are helping their child choose books to read! We have worked on choosing books that have the 5 FInger Rule!
DAILY CAFE CENTERS
These are literature centers that are focused on word work, creative writing, reading comprehension and expanding vocabulary.
WRITING
During our literacy block we have two different writing segments. The first writing will take place during DAILY CAFE CENTERS . During this time, students are able to write in their journals on any topic of their choice. Some students write poetry, comic strips, fictional stories, and non-fiction journal entries while others are writing songs, dialogues, and dramas. The other segment of writing is our "Writer's Workshop". During this time students work on an assigned writing piece. This varies each quarter of the school year. I model for students the planning process as well as drafting, editing, revising, and publishing. First quarter students write autobiographies and persuasive essays. The second quarter they write newspaper articles, third quarter they write myths and legends, and the fourth quarter we focus on poetry. Students also work together to peer edit their writing pieces in order to prepare for publishing.
