Common Core Objectives for the Math, Literacy, and Social Studies for July /August/September.
MATH
5.NBT.5 Fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.
5.NBT.6 Find whole-number quotients of whole numbers with up to four-digit dividends and two-digit divisors, using strategies based on place value, the properties of operations, and/or the relationship between multiplication and division. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.
(Divide Whole Numbers by One Digit)
LITERACY
FS5.3a Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis in decoding words. Use combined knowledge of all letter-sound correspondences, syllabication patterns, and morphology (e.g., roots and affixes) to read accurately unfamiliar multi-syllabic words in context and out of context.
FS5.4a Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension. Read on-level text with purpose and understanding.
L5.4b Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases based on grade 5 reading and content, choosing flexibly from a range of strategies. Use common, grade-appropriate Greek and Latin affixes and roots as clues to the meaning of a word (e.g., photograph, photosynthesis).
SOCIAL STUDIES
5.E.1, 5.E.2 Understand how a market economy impacts life in the United States.
Understand that personal choices result in benefits or consequences. How we apply it in Class
Math
We are continuing decimals, but really look at the place value system within decimals. They will be investigated the theory of powers of ten. They will be looking at exponents briefly, but to help them realize that a place value to the left is ten times the number and the place value to the right is 1/10 of it. We will be looking at why the decimal point moves to the left and right when muliplying and dividing. We are trying to develop a strong number sense, and teaching the students to really understand decimas. This week we will also be focusing on rounding decimals.
Literacy
We began meeting in small guided reading groups this week, but had to take a step back and practice working quietly in daily 5 centers again. We are going to continue practicing and working on staying focused on our work, and talking quietly to the partner we might be working with.
This week we will be using poetry to help us practice fluency and accuracy. We will also spend some time investigating similes and metaphors.
We will be reading poetry three ways:1. for enjoyment 2. for important words, themes, and figurative language 3. to summarize
Science
We are beginning our science unit this week. This will continue for the next 6 weeks until we track out. Out science units are very hands on and we incorporate a lot of technology. This unit is extremely rich in Vocabulary. We will be incoporating our vocabulary into our Literacy block as well. This weather unit we will be working on weather instruments, weather patterns, clouds, winds, fronts, and how to predict weather. Common Core Objectives
5.NBT.1 Recognize that in a multi-digit number, a digit in one place represents 10 times as much as it represents in the place to its right and 1/10 of what it represents in the place to its left.
5.NBT.2 Explain patterns in the number of zeros of the product when multiplying a number by powers of 10, and explain patterns in the placement of the decimal point when a decimal is multiplied or divided by a power of 10. Use whole-number exponents to denote powers of 10.
5.NBT.4 Use place value understanding to round decimals to any place.
FS5.3a Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis in decoding words. Use combined knowledge of all letter-sound correspondences, syllabication patterns, and morphology (e.g., roots and affixes) to read accurately unfamiliar multi-syllabic words in context and out of context.
FS5.4c Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension. Read on-level text orally with accuracy, appropriate rate, and expression on successive readings.
L5.5c Demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word relationships, and nuances in word meanings. Use the relationship between particular words (e.g., synonyms, antonyms, homographs) to better understand each of the words.
RL5.2 Determine the theme of a story, drama, or poem from details in the text, including how characters in a story or drama respond to challenges or how the speaker in a poem reflects upon a topic; summarizes the text.
5.E.1 Understand weather patterns and phenomena, making connection to the weather in a particular place and time.
5.E.1.1 Compare daily and seasonal changes in weather conditions (including wind speed and direction, precipitation, and temperature) and patterns.
5.E.1.2 Predict upcoming weather events from weather data collected through observation and measurements
